Dance as Therapeutic Proces
In my own experience, over the past decade I have often sought counseling to process
or to help move me through different life experiences. Whilst I can wax lyrical to a
therapist for hours and it certainly helps to share it with an objective third person,
the emotion and cellular memory that is coming to the surface for release about the
life experience in question, remains in my body.
However, if I am dancing and set an intention to release a block from my body,
the body literally re-organises at a cellular level and the healing takes place at a deeper
part of me. The learning is not just understood with the mind but is taken in for healing
and transformation through the body.
I have found that using dance as a spiritual practice at the same time as counselling
or other pathways of healing, has allowed me to become more aware of my patterns.
Dance is instrumental in helping me shift through my life issues in a more expedient way.
It's little wonder that people are so fearful of dancing, particularly without alcohol,
because dancing really does expose your inner truth. I tell people that when you
dance, you are dancing your life. The body cannot hide your
true inner essence. As you allow yourself to go deeper in the dance over time, you allow
yourself to shed layers, the layers that protect and help hide your real essential self to
the outside world. Be aware of what shows up on the dance-floor, it can tell you
something meaningful if you
are ready to listen and look at it.
